Sometimes there may be a need to have a group or class where members cannot see each other. Therefore, there is a setting for groups called "Group with hidden members". Examples of situations where "Group with hidden members" can be used are:

  • Mother tongue units - with language groups where participants have different ethnicities
  • Adapted school - where those who study according to the adapted school curriculum should not be seen by other group members
  • Groups with students with protected identity

The function should be used sparingly, as it limits the possibility for collaboration between users in Unikum.

Consequences of turning on "Group with hidden members"

For Children/students and their guardians

  • They cannot see other children/students in the group, and cannot see other children/students or guardians in the contact list.
  • They can only see the educators/teachers who belong to the group.
  • They cannot comment on learning log entries or messages made in this group, only read them.
  • They cannot use collaborative planning creation, etc.

For educators/teachers

  • You see all members in the group, just as usual.
  • You can comment on learning log entries in the group as usual.
  • Users (students and guardians) cannot see each other's contact information, so teachers need to handle contact lists in other ways.

For staff with administrator role

  • You can work just as usual
  • In lists of groups in the Admin tool, you can see which groups have the "Group with hidden members" setting

For staff with observer role

  • You can work just as usual

The "Group with hidden members" function should be used sparingly. This is mainly because collaboration and collaborative learning between students requires that they can see and communicate with each other, even digitally. The function prevents dialogue about learning between students in learning logs, planning, etc., both in current and upcoming functions in Unikum. Additionally, "Group with hidden members" can hinder smooth dialogue with the home and create extra workload for staff regarding contact information.

Make a class/group hidden

  • Create a new group as usual (or go to the Settings tab on an already existing group)
  • Check the small box "Group with hidden members"

Admin view of groups

For those who are admin you can see in the Hidden members column which groups have this setting.

User view - group with hidden members

In a hidden group, users cannot see each other but staff can see the contact information. It is clearly indicated on the group's start page that it is hidden.
